Celebrating 5 years of Streets For All

When I started Streets For All in 2019, we had one goal: to get people elected that shared our values, figuring that change would be a lot easier with the right people in office.

Five years later, we’ve grown from just a few individuals volunteering part time, into a community of over 600 volunteers and 5 full time staff committed to transforming streets. While there much more work to be done, we’ve helped evolve a very different (and much more progressive) city council, region, and even state.

26 BILLS SIGNED INTO LAW - Thanks to the work of our amazing state team (initially led by Bubba Fish, who is now a Councilmember in Culver City) under Marc Vukcevich and Kirsten Bladh, over the last three years, the governor has signed 26 of our sponsored bills into law! You can see our list from 2023, and from 2024; highlights include requiring Caltrans to implement complete streets, legalizing speed cameras, requiring cities to daylight intersections, and taking steps to legalize noise cameras.

39 ENDORSED CANDIDATES ELECTED - We have endorsed transit champions in the City of Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Culver City, Santa Monica, Burbank, and many other surrounding cities, LA County, as well as candidates running for State Assembly and State Senate. So far, we’ve had 39 endorsed candidates elected; these amazing leaders truly believe in safe streets, and our region will look very different in just a few short years thanks to their leadership.

100+ MILES OF BIKE AND BUS LANES INSTALLED IN THE CITY OF LA - The COVID pandemic hit just after we started our work, and shortly thereafter the City of Los Angeles initiated the ADAPT program to accelerate repaving on commercial corridors while normal vehicle traffic volumes were down. We jumped on the opportunity, and worked with the city to get many bike and bus lanes in the ground. Thanks in large part to our amazing community and the advocacy we’ve been able to effectuate, we’ve seen over 100 miles of bike and bus lanes installed in Los Angeles in the last five years.

20,000 PUBLIC COMMENTS GENERATED - We could not do our work without our community. Between our email list and social media profiles, we reach thousands of people that care about bike lanes, bus lanes, and safer streets, and are willing to show up to make them happen. In the last five years, our community has sent in over 20,000 public comments (emails, phone calls, and public comment forms) in support of high quality road safety projects or initiatives.

362,000+ VOTES FOR MEASURE HLA - The passage of Measure HLA was a watershed moment in Los Angeles, not just because it meant that the City of Los Angeles will have to implement thousands of miles of safer streets, but because it showed the region and even the country that the second largest city in the nation wants safer streets and things like bike lanes, bus lanes, and pedestrian improvements. For too long in Los Angeles, it was assumed that projects like these were political suicide; we’ve flipped that narrative on its head. With 2/3 of voters voting for HLA, it’s now clear that if you are a politician in Los Angeles that goes against road safety projects, there will be a political price to pay at the ballot box.

It’s hard to believe it’s only been five years. I’m so thankful for the Streets For All team, our over 600 volunteers, and the many thousands in our community that rise to the occasion when needed. We’ve done so much in five years, and at the same time we’re just getting started.
