Slow street changes at LA City Council's Transportation Committee

This Monday, the Transportation Committee will consider making changes to slow streets

Slow streets have been incredibly popular in Los Angeles! LADOT has received over 427 applications to date, and has implemented over 52 miles of slow streets in 30 neighborhoods.

This Monday at 1pm, the Los Angeles City Council's Transportation Committee is considering a motion to give new options to existing slow street sponsors (read the full memo from LADOT here):

Proposed options for existing slow street areas:

1 - Replace temporary signage with more permanent metal signs (warning drivers to watch out for people walking/biking and advise them to drive <15mph) with new striping on the street to slow cars down.

2 - Implement better, more durable temporary barricades with signs designating the streets as closed to through traffic.

3 - Not do either option, which may result in the removal of slow streets in that area.

While funding has been identified ($800,000) to implement these changes on existing slow streets, LADOT is proposing pausing new slow street implementations until more funding can be identified. Nevertheless, we believe it's essential to improve the existing 50.2 miles of slow streets with better materials and make them more functional, while the City searches for more funding.

Example of a mid block treatment in West Hollywood to slow down cars, which could be what option #1 looks like.

Please make public comment in support of continuing slow streets and implementing option #1. Striping and metal signs would be a huge improvement, and could serve as a model for other areas once more funding is identified.

Make public comment in advance using this link, or if you're able, call into the meeting (this can be even more impactful). At 1:15pm on Monday, call 669-254-5252 and use Meeting ID No. 161 750 5079, then press #, # again when prompted for participant ID. Once admitted into the meeting, press *9 to request to speak.

If you can call in to make public comment, add a reminder to your calendar:
